Target Information

C3 is pivotal in activating the complement system, with its processing by C3 convertase being the key reaction in both the classical and alternative complement pathways. Upon activation, C3b can covalently bind to cell surface carbohydrates or immune aggregates through its reactive thioester. In mice, the functions of complement C3 are complex and varied, encompassing protection against neurodegenerative diseases, immune regulation, inflammatory response, and defense against infections. In the APP/PS1 transgenic mouse model, the absence of complement C3 significantly lessened synaptic loss and cognitive decline in the hippocampus, as well as reduced Aβ plaque deposition.
