Target Information

C1q combines with the proenzymes C1r and C1s to form C1, the initial component of the serum complement system. The collagen-like regions of C1q engage with the calcium-dependent C1r2C1s2 proenzyme complex, enabling efficient activation of C1 when the globular heads of C1q bind with the Fc regions of IgG or IgM antibodies in immune complexes. C1qa is an integral part of the C1q protein complex, which is vital in the classical complement activation pathway. Research has demonstrated that a deficiency in C1qa is strongly linked to the onset of systemic lupus erythematosus-like symptoms in mice, with C1qa-deficient mice displaying antinuclear antibodies and proliferative glomerulonephritis, symptoms akin to human systemic lupus erythematosus.
