Target Information
In mice, the function of COL15 (type XV collagen) is primarily associated with bone and muscle-related diseases. Knockout studies of the COL15A1 gene have revealed that mice lacking COL15A1 can still develop and reproduce normally, showing no significant differences from wild-type mice. However, COL15A1-deficient mice exhibit progressive histological changes indicative of muscle disease after three months and are more susceptible to exercise-induced muscle damage. This highlights COL15A1's crucial role in maintaining muscle health. Additionally, COL15 has been explored for its role as a cell adhesion domain that enhances integrin-mediated cell spreading. By binding to specific integrins, the cell adhesion domain of COL15 facilitates cell spreading and may contribute to the migration of skin cells.
