Target Information
Type VI collagen is crucial for the development and maintenance of bones, muscles, articular cartilage, and various tissues in mice. In mice lacking the Col6a1 gene, the absence of type VI collagen significantly weakens the mechanical properties of the cartilage matrix, such as its elastic modulus, potentially accelerating osteoarthritis progression. Additionally, these knockout mice show delayed secondary ossification and lower bone density, indicating type VI collagen's vital role in skeletal development. Within the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), type VI collagen is essential for chondrocyte differentiation and ossification. Mice deficient in Col6a2 display reduced bone volume, expanded bone marrow spaces, and irregular chondrocyte differentiation. In oral tissues, type VI collagen aids in the regulation of alveolar bone biomineralization. Col6a2 knockout mice experience decreased alveolar bone volume, increased mineralization density, and bone loss due to periodontitis.
