Target Information
Collagen VI functions as a cell-binding protein, with the collagen alpha-1(VI) chain (Col6a1) playing numerous critical roles in mice. Its absence can lead to various physiological and pathological changes, including abnormalities in bones, joints, muscles, skin, metabolism, and the nervous system. In mice, the loss of Col6a1 results in reduced mechanical properties of articular cartilage and accelerates the development of degenerative joint lesions. For instance, Col6a1-/- mice exhibit significant alterations in trabecular structure, reduced bone mass, decreased bone density, and increased mineral content. These changes are associated with aging, but they do not significantly impact the friction coefficient or compression modulus of the joints.
