Target Information
Factor VII plays a crucial role in initiating the extrinsic pathway of blood coagulation. As a serine protease, it circulates in the bloodstream in its inactive zymogen form. Activation of Factor VII to its active form, factor VIIa, occurs through minor proteolysis by factors such as factor Xa, factor XIIa, factor IXa, or thrombin. When tissue factor and calcium ions are present, factor VIIa facilitates the conversion of factor X into factor Xa through limited proteolysis. Additionally, in the presence of tissue factor and calcium, factor VIIa can also convert factor IX to factor IXa. In mice, coagulation factor VII is primarily synthesized in the liver and circulates in the blood at approximately 0.5 μg/ml. This factor is integral to thrombosis and blood coagulation, particularly within the tissue factor pathway.
