Target Information

Claudin-5 is essential for the tight junction-specific sealing of intercellular spaces, functioning through calcium-independent cell adhesion. In mice, Claudin-5 is primarily involved in the formation and maintenance of the blood-brain barrier (BBB). As a key cell adhesion molecule in tight junctions, Claudin-5 is expressed in brain endothelial cells, significantly affecting the selective permeability to small molecules. Claudin-5-deficient mice die shortly after birth due to impaired BBB function. In adult mice, the knockout of Claudin-5 results in BBB disruption, leading to spontaneous epileptic seizures and abnormal behavior.
