Target Information
Claudin-2 forms paracellular channels by polymerizing into tight junction strands that contain cation- and water-selective channels, facilitating epithelial permeability through a process called paracellular tight junction permeability. In the intestinal epithelium, it enables the flux of sodium and water from the peritoneal side to the intestinal lumen, thereby regulating nutrient absorption and aiding in the clearance of enteric pathogens as part of the mucosal immune response. In the mouse colon, the expression level of Claudin-2 correlates with inflammatory responses. For instance, following Salmonella infection, Claudin-2 expression increases significantly, which is linked to bacterial invasion and disruption of the intestinal barrier. Claudin-2 is also involved in the reabsorption of Na+ and Cl− in the mouse intestine, which is crucial for maintaining intestinal homeostasis and preventing fluid loss.
