Target Information
Ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF) acts as a vital survival factor for various neuronal cell types, appearing to prevent the degeneration of motor axons post-axotomy. In mice, CNTF primarily supports the survival and differentiation of motor neurons, enhances motor function, encourages neuronal regeneration, and protects various neuron types. In the wobbler mouse model, CNTF is used to study motor neuron diseases, with studies indicating that it can significantly enhance grip strength, reduce abnormal paw positioning and walking patterns, and slow disease progression. Additionally, CNTF has been found to promote the regeneration of peripheral nerves. For instance, injecting CNTF into the peroneal muscle of adult mice can stimulate the growth of motor neuron neurites.
