Target Information

Chitotriosidase-1 is an enzyme that degrades chitin, chitotriose, and chitobiose, and is likely involved in defending against nematodes and other pathogens. As a mammalian-specific glycoside hydrolase, CHIT1 breaks down chitosan, a polysaccharide integral to the cell walls of many pathogens, including fungi and bacteria. By degrading chitosan, CHIT1 hampers the growth and invasion of these pathogens, thereby enhancing immune defense. For instance, CHIT1-deficient mice demonstrate a significant reduction in renal fungal burden in cases of systemic candidiasis, indicating that CHIT1 plays a crucial role in antifungal immunity and aids in limiting bacterial spread.
