Target Information

C-C chemokine receptor type 5 (CCR5) is a receptor for several inflammatory CC-chemokines, including CCL3/MIP-1-alpha, CCL4/MIP-1-beta, and RANTES. It transduces signals by increasing intracellular calcium ion levels and might influence granulocytic lineage proliferation or differentiation. CCR5 facilitates T-lymphocyte migration to infection sites by acting as a chemotactic receptor. Additionally, CCR5 significantly impacts neurobehavior and cognitive function in mice. Research indicates that CCR5-deficient mice (ccr5−/−) outperform wild-type mice in tasks like social recognition, spatial memory, and fear conditioning, suggesting that CCR5 inhibits synaptic plasticity, learning, and memory. Overexpression of CCR5 can cause memory deficits, whereas reduced function can enhance cognitive abilities. For instance, CCR5 knockout mice demonstrated superior spatial memory in the Morris water maze test, and CCR5-deficient mice exhibited less freezing behavior in the fear conditioning test.
