Target Information
Cathepsin S is a thiol protease crucial for removing the invariant chain from MHC class II molecules and facilitating MHC class II antigen presentation. Its bond specificity is somewhat akin to that of cathepsin L. In mice, the function of cathepsin S (catS) primarily pertains to the immune response, especially in the degradation of the invariant chain (Ii) by antigen-presenting cells (APCs). Studies indicate that both catS and catL are involved in the later stages of Ii degradation. However, unlike catL, catS activity is significantly increased in macrophages (Mφs) stimulated by interferon-γ (IFN-γ), while catL has little effect under these conditions.
