Target Information
Cathepsin K is a thiol protease that plays a crucial role in osteoclastic bone resorption. It exhibits strong endoprotease activity against fibrinogen in acidic conditions and is significant in extracellular matrix degradation. Additionally, Cathepsin K is involved in releasing the thyroid hormone thyroxine (T4) through the limited proteolysis of thyroglobulin (TG) in the thyroid follicle lumen. In mice, it maintains physiological balance by regulating bone resorption, vascular remodeling, and inflammatory responses. Within the periodontitis model, using RNA interference to inhibit Cathepsin K expression significantly reduces bone resorption and inflammation. During mouse embryonic development, its expression is closely tied to osteoblast differentiation.
