Target Information
Cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (COMP) contributes to the structural integrity of cartilage by interacting with other extracellular matrix proteins such as collagens and fibronectin. It facilitates the interaction between chondrocytes and the cartilage matrix through binding with cell surface integrin receptors. In mice, COMP's function is primarily associated with cartilage development, degeneration, and the pathophysiology of osteoarthritis (OA). Predominantly found in cartilage tissue, COMP is especially abundant in the interterritorial matrix. Research indicates that COMP is evenly distributed in young individuals, but becomes more concentrated in the deep cartilage of older individuals.
