Target Information

Calreticulin is a calcium-binding chaperone that facilitates protein folding, oligomeric assembly, and quality control in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) through the calreticulin/calnexin cycle. This lectin transiently interacts with nearly all monoglucosylated glycoproteins synthesized in the ER. In mice, calreticulin serves a wide array of functions, ranging from cardiac development and endoplasmic reticulum stress response to immune regulation and cancer therapy. It plays a critical role in heart development, as studies have shown that knocking out the calreticulin gene can result in embryonic heart defects, such as reduced ventricular wall thickness and increased deep interstitial retraction in the ventricular cavity, ultimately leading to embryonic death.
