Target Information
Voltage-sensitive calcium channels (VSCCs) facilitate the entry of calcium ions into excitable cells and are crucial for various calcium-dependent processes, including muscle contraction, hormone or neurotransmitter release, gene expression, cell motility, cell division, and cell death. The alpha-1B subunit is responsible for generating N-type calcium currents, and these N-type channels are categorized under the 'high-voltage activated' (HVA) group. In mice, the Cacna1b gene plays a central role in regulating calcium ion channels, particularly within the nervous and cardiovascular systems. Genetic knockout of Cacna1b has been shown to improve cardiac function imbalance in heart failure mouse models and prevent the onset of fatal arrhythmias.
