Target Information
The voltage-dependent L-type calcium channel subunit alpha-1S is the pore-forming alpha-1S subunit of the voltage-gated calcium channel that generates L-type calcium currents in skeletal muscle. These calcium channels, containing the alpha-1S subunit, are crucial for excitation-contraction coupling in skeletal muscle through their interaction with RYR1. This interaction triggers Ca2+ release from the sarcoplasmic reticulum, leading to muscle contraction. Cacna1s primarily facilitates the excitation-contraction coupling (E-C coupling) process in skeletal muscle. Research indicates that Cacna1s influences muscle contraction by regulating calcium ion release. Notably, TnT3, a calcium-binding protein, modulates its transcription by binding to the Cacna1s promoter region, affecting Cacna1s expression levels-a mechanism particularly important in aging mice. Reduced TnT3 expression leads to decreased Cacna1s levels, thereby impacting skeletal muscle strength.
