Target Information
Voltage-sensitive calcium channels (VSCCs) facilitate the entry of calcium ions into excitable cells and are integral to various calcium-dependent processes, including muscle contraction, hormone or neurotransmitter release, gene expression, cell motility, cell division, and cell death. In mouse models, the knockout or loss of function of the Cacna1d gene results in neurobehavioral abnormalities such as hyperactivity, reduced sociability, and impaired learning and memory. These traits mirror neurodevelopmental syndromes seen in human patients. Additionally, in mice, Cacna1d gene knockout leads to reduced insulin secretion and impaired glucose tolerance, highlighting the gene's important role in regulating blood glucose homeostasis.
