Target Information

Calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase type II subunit alpha is a calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase that becomes autonomous following Ca2+/calmodulin binding and autophosphorylation. It plays a role in various processes, including synaptic plasticity, neurotransmitter release, and long-term potentiation. CAMK2A is highly expressed in the mouse brain, particularly in regions like the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex, which are closely linked to learning and memory. Studies have shown that the loss of CAMK2A results in severe spatial learning deficits and conditional learning disorders, such as poor performance in the water maze test, and impairs long-term potentiation (LTP) in the hippocampus.
