Target Information

C-reactive protein (CRP) plays several roles in host defense, including promoting agglutination, bacterial capsular swelling, phagocytosis, and complement fixation through its calcium-dependent binding to phosphorylcholine. It can also interact with DNA and histones, potentially scavenging nuclear material from damaged circulating cells. In mouse models, functional studies of CRP have primarily focused on its role in inflammation and immune response. CRP enhances inflammatory responses by binding to receptors on leukocyte surfaces, which facilitates leukocyte migration and aggregation. Additionally, CRP significantly influences the early stages of atherosclerosis by promoting monocyte migration and plaque formation.
