In response to allergens, Eotaxin directly facilitates the accumulation of eosinophils, a key aspect of allergic inflammatory responses, but does not affect lymphocytes, macrophages, or neutrophils. It binds to the CCR3 receptor. The role of CCL11 in neural stem cells (NPCs) has been extensively researched, showing that CCL11 can activate NPCs and enhance their proliferation and migration. In young mice, CCL11 may promote neurogenesis and gliogenesis, whereas, in aged mice, elevated CCL11 levels inhibit neurogenesis, leading to decreased learning and memory abilities. CCL11 can also induce oxidative stress and glutamate-mediated neurotoxicity by activating microglia and triggering their production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which are linked to various neurodegenerative diseases.
