Target Information
Brain Natriuretic Peptide (BNP) is a hormone secreted by the heart, primarily produced in the ventricles of mice, and plays a crucial role in regulating blood pressure, fluid balance, and overall cardiovascular function. BNP achieves its physiological effects by binding to the Natriuretic Peptide Receptor A (NPRA) and activating guanylyl cyclase-A (GC-A), leading to the production of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP). This results in effects such as diuresis, vasodilation, and reduced blood pressure, in addition to providing protective benefits against cardiac hypertrophy and fibrosis. The functions and mechanisms of BNP have been extensively explored using mouse models. For instance, BNP-deficient mice (such as Npr1-/- mice) exhibit significant cardiac hypertrophy and myocardial fibrosis, which resemble the cardiac pathological characteristics seen in human heart failure patients.
