Target Information

Bone morphogenetic protein 4 (BMP4) is a growth factor within the TGF-beta superfamily, crucial for various developmental processes, such as neurogenesis, vascular development, angiogenesis, and osteogenesis. As a member of the TGF-β superfamily, BMP4 is significantly involved in the early development of mouse embryos, playing a pivotal role in multiple stages, notably in mesoderm formation and differentiation. Absence of BMP4 leads to embryonic lethality between days 6.5 and 9.5, characterized by defects in mesoderm development, posterior structural abnormalities, and issues with the positioning and survival of primordial germ cells (PGCs). Furthermore, BMP4 contributes to the development of the inner ear, kidneys, and urethra. In Bmp4+/− mice, rotational behavior is observed, indicating potential inner ear dysfunction.
