Target Information

Bone morphogenetic protein 10 (BMP10) is essential for sustaining the proliferative activity of embryonic cardiomyocytes by preventing the premature activation of the negative cell cycle regulator CDKN1C/p57KIP and maintaining necessary expression levels of cardiogenic factors like MEF2C and NKX2-5. BMP10, a peptide growth factor belonging to the TGF-β superfamily, plays a critical role in mouse heart development. It is crucial for ventricular myocyte proliferation and maturation, particularly during the contractile ring formation stage of ventricular development. Under hyperglycemic conditions, overexpression of BMP10 can exacerbate myocardial hypertrophy. In BMP10-deficient mice, even though the heart initially develops normally, it eventually exhibits weakened heart function and hypertrophy in adulthood.
