Target Information
Filensin is essential for the proper formation of lens intermediate filaments, as part of a complex that includes BFSP1, BFSP2, and CRYAA. It plays a role in modulating the calcium regulation of MIP water permeability. The filensin, encoded by the BFSP1 gene, is a lens-specific intermediate filament protein that, in conjunction with CP49 (BFSP2), forms "beaded-string fibers." These fibers are crucial for maintaining the optical properties and long-term transparency of the lens. In mice, a knockout of the BFSP1 gene impairs the assembly of these beaded-string fibers, leading to increased light scattering within the lens, which manifests as lens opacity.
