ATPase, H+/K+ Exchanging Beta Polypeptide serves as the beta subunit of the gastric H+/K+ ATPase pump, facilitating the transport of H+ ions in exchange for K+ ions across the apical membrane of parietal cells. This subunit is critical for both the structural integrity and regulatory processes involved in assembling and directing the pump to the membrane. In mouse gastric parietal cells, ATP4B is essential for normal function. Its absence can lead to reduced gastric acid secretion, resulting in pathological changes in the gastric mucosa, including gastric dilatation, mucous cyst formation, and incomplete intestinal metaplasia. Moreover, the expression level of ATP4B is closely linked to the capacity for gastric acid secretion, with its downregulation or loss potentially increasing the risk of gastric cancer.
