Target Information
Copper-transporting ATPase 2 is a transmembrane protein that facilitates the transport of copper ions out of cells, notably mediating the efflux of copper from the liver into bile. In mice, the Atp7b protein is crucial for copper and lipid metabolism, neurotransmitter synthesis, and cytoskeleton maintenance. ATP7B primarily functions in the liver, where it directs copper to the bile secretion pathway for excretion. Mice lacking the Atp7b gene (Atp7b-/-) exhibit excessive copper accumulation, particularly in the liver, resulting in elevated copper levels within hepatocytes. This accumulation can lead to cirrhosis, fatty degeneration, and liver cancer.
