Target Information
Sarcoplasmic/endoplasmic reticulum calcium ATPase 2, also known as ATPase, Ca++ Transporting, Cardiac Muscle, Slow Twitch 2, is a magnesium-dependent enzyme that catalyzes ATP hydrolysis, facilitating the movement of calcium from the cytosol into the lumen of the sarcoplasmic reticulum. This enzyme is also involved in autophagy in response to starvation. In mice, Atp2a2 has several key functions, including maintaining calcium homeostasis in the heart and skeletal muscle, promoting skin health, and influencing cancer susceptibility. A deficiency or reduced function of Atp2a2 decreases the calcium storage capacity of cardiomyocytes, impacting cardiac contractility and relaxation. For example, in Atp2a2 heterozygous mice, despite reduced myocardial contractility and calcium release capacity, overall cardiac function remains normal.
