Target Information
ABCG2, an ATP-binding cassette transporter with broad substrate specificity, is an ATP-dependent transporter that actively expels various physiological compounds, dietary toxins, and xenobiotics from cells. It plays a crucial role in porphyrin homeostasis by facilitating the export of protoporphyrin IX (PPIX) from mitochondria to the cytosol and from the cytosol to the extracellular space, as well as in the export of heme. In mice, ABCG2 is integral to several functions, including drug metabolism, cardiovascular protection, uric acid metabolism, the maintenance and function of hematopoietic stem cells, and exhibiting antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Research indicates that mice lacking ABCG2 experience significant cardiac dysfunction when subjected to chronic hypoxic conditions, manifested by impaired diastolic function in both the left and right ventricles.
