Target Information

Aspartate aminotransferase, cytoplasmic, is an enzyme that catalyzes the biosynthesis of L-glutamate from L-aspartate or L-cysteine. It is a crucial regulator of glutamate levels, the primary excitatory neurotransmitter in the vertebrate central nervous system, and functions as a scavenger of glutamate for brain neuroprotection. In mice, aspartate aminotransferase plays roles in various areas, including amino acid metabolism, serving as a marker for cardiovascular diseases, assessing liver function, and regulating the immune system. In liver ischemia-reperfusion injury models, AST activity is used to evaluate liver function damage.
