Target Information

Aspartate aminotransferase 2 (AspAT2) in mice is primarily localized within mitochondria and plays a critical role in amino acid metabolism, energy metabolism, and the maintenance of redox balance. Unlike aspartate aminotransferase 1 (AspAT1), AspAT2 exhibits distinct cellular distribution and functions. Specifically, AspAT2 is involved in the metabolism of glutamate and aspartate within mitochondria, as well as redox reactions linked to the malate-aspartate shuttle. This shuttle mechanism is vital for sustaining NADH levels in mitochondria, which in turn supports the efficiency of the electron transport chain.
