Target Information
Aromatase is a crucial enzyme responsible for converting androgens, like testosterone, into estrogens, and its gene (cyp19) is prominently expressed in the ovaries and brain tissues of mice. Research indicates that the absence of aromatase can cause significant reproductive system abnormalities in mice. For instance, aromatase knockout mice (ArKO) exhibit genital hypoplasia and uterine atrophy shortly after birth, with blocked ovarian follicle development and no corpus luteum formation. Additionally, aromatase knockout mice (Aro^ΔaP2) display reduced bone density, particularly in the trabecular region. Estrogen, synthesized by aromatase in adipose tissue, helps maintain bone density by regulating phosphate reabsorption in the renal tubules. Aromatase's role in neuroprotection has also been extensively studied, with knockout mice showing more severe neurodegenerative damage when calcium ion concentration and glutamate release in the hippocampus are increased.
