Target Information

Aquaporin-2 forms a water-specific channel that endows the plasma membranes of renal collecting ducts with high water permeability, allowing water to move along an osmotic gradient. In mice, aquaporin-2 (AQP2) is chiefly responsible for water reabsorption and urine concentration in the kidney. AQP2, regulated by the antidiuretic hormone (ADH, also known as vasopressin), is primarily expressed in the epithelial membrane of the principal cells of the renal collecting ducts. Proper functioning of AQP2 is crucial for maintaining fluid balance. Mice with the AQP2-F204V mutation can survive into adulthood; however, their AQP2 protein is retained in the endoplasmic reticulum instead of reaching the cell membrane, leading to a defect in urine concentration.
