Target Information
AIF is a mitochondrial transmembrane protein that induces apoptosis by causing DNA breakage and chromatin condensation as it is released into the cytoplasm and nucleus. This process occurs through a caspase-independent pathway, distinguishing it from the traditional caspase-dependent apoptosis pathway. In mice, the absence of AIF results in increased apoptosis of β cells, negatively impacting insulin secretion and contributing to diabetes development. Additionally, AIF is crucial in hypoxic-ischemic brain damage, where its overexpression worsens neuronal cell death. AIF is also vital for maintaining the function of mitochondrial respiratory chain complex I. Research indicates that AIF deficiency leads to dysfunction in the mitochondrial respiratory chain, causing a decrease in mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS). This dysfunction is closely associated with muscle atrophy, cardiomyopathy, and metabolic abnormalities in mice.
