Target Information
Apolipoprotein A1 is involved in the reverse cholesterol transport process, facilitating the movement of cholesterol from tissues to the liver for excretion. It promotes cholesterol efflux from tissues and serves as a cofactor for lecithin cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT). Additionally, as part of the SPAP complex, it activates spermatozoa motility. In mice, Apoa1 (apolipoprotein A1) plays roles in cardiovascular health, immune regulation, neuroprotection, and metabolic regulation. It is the primary protein component of high-density lipoprotein (HDL), comprising about 70% of total HDL molecules. Apoa1 is crucial for cardiovascular health by enhancing the reverse transport of cholesterol from peripheral tissues to the liver and maintaining HDL functionality. Research indicates that mice lacking Apoa1 experience more severe inflammatory responses and vascular damage in atherosclerosis models, while Apoa1 supplementation can mitigate these pathological effects.
