Target Information

Rat Proprotein Convertase Subtilisin/Kexin Type 9 (PCSK9) is a secreted serine protease that binds hepatic LDL receptors, directing them to lysosomal degradation and thereby raising plasma LDL-cholesterol. Synthesized mainly in liver and intestine, PCSK9 circulates in plasma and interacts with receptors on hepatocytes, modulating cholesterol uptake. Loss-of-function lowers LDL, while gain-of-function promotes hypercholesterolemia. As a key regulator of lipoprotein clearance, PCSK9 is an important target for studies of lipid metabolism and atherosclerosis.
