Rat glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) is a type III intermediate filament protein predominantly expressed in glial cells. It features a conserved central α-helical rod domain essential for filament assembly and structural stability. This protein localizes mainly to the cytoskeleton and cellular processes of astrocytes, forming stable filamentous networks. Its distinct sequence and tissue-specific expression pattern clearly distinguish it from other intermediate filament family members.
