Target Information
Rat carnitine acetyltransferase (CrAT) is a 74-kDa mitochondrial enzyme highly expressed in rat cardiac muscle, skeletal muscle, and liver. It catalyzes the reversible transfer of acetyl groups between acetyl-CoA and carnitine, regulating acetyl-CoA homeostasis and facilitating acetyl group transport across mitochondrial membranes. This mechanism supports fatty acid oxidation, energy metabolism, and acetylcholine synthesis in rats. Critical for cardiac function, muscle performance, and metabolic homeostasis, its dysregulation associates with cardiomyopathy, metabolic syndrome, and skeletal muscle disorders. As a key mediator of mitochondrial acetyl group metabolism, rat CrAT is a critical target for studying metabolic pathobiology, cardiovascular diseases, and enzyme-targeted therapeutic development.
