Target Information
Steroid hormone receptors are ligand-activated transcription factors that regulate eukaryotic gene expression, influencing cellular proliferation and differentiation in target tissues. In mice, androgen receptors (AR) have a wide range of functions, impacting the reproductive system, bone health, behavioral performance, and other physiological processes. AR is crucial for the reproductive system in both male and female mice. In male mice, AR supports normal reproductive function by regulating spermatogenesis and gonadal development. For instance, studies have shown that knocking out the testis-specific AR gene in male mice results in abnormal testicular development, spermatogenesis disorders, and a complete loss of male external genitalia characteristics, highlighting the essential role of AR in male reproductive function. Additionally, AR is important in specific cell types in the epididymis, such as Sertoli cells, where its absence leads to halted spermatogenesis.
