Target Information
In mice, the amyloid beta peptide 1-40 (Aβ1-40) is primarily associated with the pathology of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Aβ1-40 is a C-terminal fragment of the amyloid precursor protein (APP), produced through cleavage by β-secretase and γ-secretase. It plays several roles in AD pathology, including contributing to neurotoxicity, oxidative stress, cell death, and cerebrovascular lesions. High levels of Aβ1-40 in tissues are closely linked to damage in brain endothelial cells and cerebrovascular lesions, which can exacerbate Alzheimer's disease progression by impairing the blood-brain barrier (BBB) function. Additionally, Aβ1-40 can activate macrophages and microglia, elevate nitric oxide production, and promote inflammatory responses.
