Target Information

Amphiregulin is a ligand for the EGF receptor (EGFR), functioning as an autocrine growth factor and a mitogen for a wide range of target cells, including astrocytes, Schwann cells, and fibroblasts. In mice, amphiregulin plays diverse and complex roles in various biological processes, such as liver regeneration, lung repair, tumor suppression, and the regulation of social behavior. These functions are facilitated through its interaction with receptors like EGFR and its specific expression patterns across different tissues and cell types. In lung injury models, amphiregulin has demonstrated protective effects. For instance, in lipopolysaccharide-induced acute lung injury (ALI), exogenous amphiregulin can reduce inflammation and fibrosis while improving lung function.
