Target Information
Alpha-hemoglobin-stabilizing protein serves as a chaperone to prevent the detrimental aggregation of alpha-hemoglobin during normal erythroid cell development, specifically safeguarding free alpha-hemoglobin from precipitation. In mice, AHSP performs several vital functions, such as stabilizing free α-Hb, limiting its oxidative capacity, facilitating the proper folding and assembly of α-Hb, and regulating vascular function. Together, these functions ensure normal erythropoiesis and maintain antioxidant balance. However, the absence of AHSP results in various pathological changes, including ineffective erythropoiesis, increased oxidative stress, and the exacerbation of β-thalassemia-like symptoms.
