Target Information

Alpha-1-antitrypsin (AAT) is a serine protease inhibitor that effectively suppresses the activity of proteases like neutrophil elastase (NE). This inhibition is crucial for safeguarding lung tissue from excessive degradation by proteases. In a mouse model of smoking-induced emphysema, AAT significantly reduced the enlargement of alveolar spaces and the development of emphysema by inhibiting NE activity. Beyond its role in direct protease inhibition, alpha-1-antitrypsin also influences inflammatory and immune responses. In mouse models, treatments with drugs such as rapamycin can enhance autophagic activity and decrease the accumulation of abnormal polymers in liver cells, thus mitigating liver damage.
