Target Information
Alkaline sphingomyelinase (al-SMase) is a crucial enzyme found in the intestine, primarily responsible for generating ceramide by hydrolyzing sphingomyelin. This process holds significant physiological importance across various organisms, as it regulates cell proliferation, apoptosis, and inflammatory responses. Research indicates that when the activity of alkaline sphingomyelinase is diminished in the intestines of mice, there is a marked increase in the accumulation of undigested sphingomyelin, accompanied by a decrease in ceramide production, ultimately leading to compromised intestinal barrier function. Besides its essential role in maintaining intestinal health, alkaline sphingomyelinase also contributes to the regulation of inflammatory responses.
