Target Information
Aldo-keto reductase family 1 member B1 facilitates the NADPH-dependent reduction of various carbonyl-containing compounds into their corresponding alcohols. It exhibits enzymatic activity towards endogenous metabolites, including aromatic and aliphatic aldehydes, ketones, monosaccharides, bile acids, and xenobiotic substrates. As a key enzyme in the polyol pathway, it catalyzes the reduction of glucose to sorbitol during hyperglycemia. Additionally, it reduces steroids, their derivatives, and prostaglandins. In mice, this enzyme is encoded by the Akr1b1 gene. AKR1B1 has multiple physiological functions in mice, including prostaglandin metabolism, inflammation regulation, metabolic balance, tumor development, reproductive maintenance, and kidney function regulation.
