Target Information
Adenylate cyclase type 10 is responsible for catalyzing the formation of the signaling molecule cAMP and may act as a sensor that mediates cellular responses to changes in bicarbonate and CO2 levels. This enzyme is crucial in mammalian spermatogenesis by producing cAMP, which regulates nuclear factors essential for sperm maturation in the epididymis. It triggers capacitation, a maturational process that sperm undergo before fertilization. In mice, the knockout of the Adcy10 gene results in severe sperm motility disorders, characterized by the inability of sperm to move forward, leading to male infertility. This condition arises from the absence of cAMP production, a vital signaling molecule for sperm activation and motility. Research indicates that sperm from Adcy10 knockout mice completely lose their ability to move forward and are unable to successfully fertilize eggs in in vitro fertilization settings.
