Target Information
Adenosine kinase catalyzes the ATP-dependent phosphorylation of the purine nucleoside adenosine at the 5' position, acting as a potential regulator of extracellular adenosine and intracellular adenine nucleotide concentrations. Predominantly expressed in astrocytes in the mouse brain, ADK plays a vital role in maintaining nervous system homeostasis by regulating adenosine levels. Overexpression of ADK can lower brain adenosine levels, leading to learning and memory disorders, epileptic seizures, and neuronal damage. In epilepsy models, increased ADK is closely linked to astrocyte overactivation and neuronal dysfunction in the hippocampus. Inhibiting ADK activity can help reduce epileptic seizures.
