Target Information
Inhibins and activins play opposing roles in regulating the secretion of follitropin by the pituitary gland, with inhibins inhibiting and activins activating its secretion. They are involved in a variety of regulatory functions based on their subunit composition, including the secretion of hormones by the hypothalamus and pituitary, gonadal hormone regulation, germ cell development and maturation, erythroid differentiation, insulin secretion, nerve cell survival, embryonic axial development, and bone growth. Inhibins generally counteract the actions of activins. In mice, Activin A fulfills a broad range of functions, such as promoting skin repair, regulating inflammatory responses, supporting neural development, contributing to bone repair, regulating immune responses, and affecting cardiac function. Notably, Activin A expression significantly increases following skin injury in mice, primarily to enhance wound healing and fibrosis.
