Target Information
In mice, 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) plays diverse roles across multiple physiological and behavioral domains, with its mechanisms and effects varying based on specific experimental conditions and receptor types. In the mouse airway, 5-HT activates epithelial cells via the 5-HT2A receptor, leading to the release of acetylcholine that causes bronchial smooth muscle contraction and airway constriction. This effect's sensitivity to atropine suggests it may occur through parasympathetic nerve pathways innervating airway smooth muscle. In adult mice, 5-HT enhances myocardial contraction through the 5-HT2A receptor, indicating its significant role in heart function. In the mouse colon, 5-HT increases the excitability of enteric interneurons via the 5-HT4 receptor, thus promoting intestinal motility and secretory function. Acting as a paracrine factor in the gastrointestinal tract, 5-HT regulates visceral neuron and smooth muscle cell activity, influencing digestive tract motility and the inflammatory response.
