Target Information
The 20S proteasome is a multi-subunit complex mainly responsible for degrading proteins independently of ubiquitin. Its degradation mechanism involves unique N-terminal serine protease active sites located in the β1, β2, and β5 subunits, capable of hydrolyzing peptide bonds of almost any amino acid residue. In various mouse tissues, the 20S proteasome displays significant functional heterogeneity. For instance, the composition and activity patterns of the 20S proteasome in the heart and liver differ, potentially influencing these organs' sensitivity to drug inhibitors like zeaxanthin.
